Bike Work Challenge

I have a commute again, as of the beginning of February, when we moved the whole family out to South Lakeside. Two years ago, when we were living at the ranch, I did a Ranch Work Bike Challenge: To make more ranch work trips by bicycle than by gasoline-powered machine—4-wheelers, and various ranch trucks and tractors. (Click on the label “ranch work bike challenge” if you want to check it out.) A couple of days ago on the top of Windy Hill I stopped for a moment and remembered the Ranch Work Bike Challenge and thought I should do it again.

Different place, same story. The late winter weather has been tricky. There are also days when Renee and I meet after work for happy hour or dinner and then come home together, which I’m not trading for anything. And the general randomness of life. I would have biked today, but on Tuesday I noticed that my back wheel had gotten very out of line and so yesterday I went to have Johnny at the Reno Bike Project fix it up. Which was beautiful, and I left and it was a great ride past the Fourth Street tweakers, past Virginia Lake, and down Lakeside. Then, past McCarran, I stopped at Lakeside Market for supplies. I went in, bought some Dead Guy, came out, and realized that I had left my pannier at the Bike Project, six miles back downtown. Haha, dumb Dan. So I went back in, asked for plastic bags, and rode my beer over Windy Hill home the old-fashioned way—slung over my handlebars. Renee went to Sacramento in her company’s vehicle early this morning, so I had the Honda to myself and was able to swing by, see Johnny, and pick up my errant pannier. It worked out pretty well though because after a beautiful morning the wind is gusting like crazy up here on the hill and rocking our cozy little tree house.

As an added incentive, I’m also making it a goal to take at least one picture each day of some aspect of my commute (the number in parenthesis, I'm not doing too well). I always have a really hard time taking pictures while commuting, so this might be even harder than writing my bike ~
