I now have not one, but two flat tires on the Surly—this is a hard world for bikes. But while one falls another rises, after an impromptu trip to Winnemucca I've gotten my ranch bike (my old Cannondale M-400 mountain bike) into fighting trim. It still only has a rear derailleur and shifter, but I don't have much call to shift through the front chainring on my daily commute across the fields. So now with two bikes I can call upon, I don't have any more excuses.
So the Ranch Work Bike Challenge is to make at least half of all my ranch trips by bicycle for the month. The month started out badly with a giant windstorm and the ranch bike not running.
Here is the breakdown so far:
Total trips: 19
Bike: 7
Machine: 12
Horse: 0
Not so good, but the past few days are getting much better, I've only ridden the machine once in the past three days, with 4 bike trips. I also want to set a mileage goal, but since I don't have an odometer on the ranch bike, I don't think that will be possible. I am going to put a box on the side of my blog so I can keep track of my trips. I think I can do this!
Cool, good luck. You should keep a tally of how many trips bodie and the dogs go on too.
