Nevada Dan: Frenchman's Arm

The other day I took the pups out toward Frenchman's Reservoir.

I had planned initially on hiking toward Dixie Peak, to the west of Frenchman's, but when I passed the little arm that peeks out toward the road on the western side of the lake, I decided instead to hike down to its mouth and to follow it up all the way back to the road.

Dusty went for a swim! (Sort of accidentally!)

It was an amazing hike, the lake is surrounded by cliffs and the wildflowers were blooming like crazy. We took our time and I stopped often to write and draw in my diary, let the pups play in the water, and generally just relax on a lazy Sunday. With the cliffs and the general roughness of the terrain, it felt very challenging to get down to the that little fingers joining with the main body of the lake and to follow it up to it terminus at the road crossing.

There was young kid fishing in a boat along me and we basically made pace on the narrow arm, he on the far side along sheer cliffs and me poking my way along the rocky sunny slope, but we never made any contact. Some other boaters went by too (it's a popular destination apparently), but I never saw anyone catch a fish. At the terminus there were some more people who had climbed down from the road cut to fish, but they were on the far side. We lounged before a nice still pool for a while and then cut back across a wildflower-dotted meadow and back to the lake, where we rested in a shady shelf overlooking the main body and watched boaters go by.

Then back to the car, altogether an amazing day and I love it when we start to do one thing, but end up doing another. Although Dixie Peak remains on my list!
